Year after year, more smoke and haze from crop burning and wildfires blanket much of the ASEAN region between January and April. The toxic smog darkens the sun, closes airports, schools, and governments.
The burning seasons around the world subject these regions to frequent intense haze episodes and PM2.5 events with AQI (Air Quality Index) measurements in the unhealthy to hazardous ranges. This smog is full of toxic pollutants, particularly PM2.5, a threat to both human and environmental health.
Noburnco will distribute small-scale Kon-Tiki biochar kilns to smallholder farmers to provide an on-site solution for converting crop residue into biochar. Farmers will earn high-quality carbon credits by producing biochar, creating new revenue streams for rural communities.
Biochar is a high-carbon form of charcoal that sequesters carbon and improves soil fertility. Improved soil increases agricultural productivity and resilience to climate change.
